Situated in the South-East corner of the Iberian Peninsula, between the regions of Andalusia, Castile-La Mancha and Valencia, the region of Murcia occupies an area of 11,317 km2.

In terms of surface area, the region of Murcia is the 9th largest of the Spanish autonomous communities. It lies at the centre of the Spanish Mediterranean coastal arch, between the longitudes 37º 23' - 38º 45'N and the latitudes 0º 39' - 2º 20'W, taking the Greenwich Meridian as reference point.

The region of Murcia has the typical Mediterranean semi-arid subtropical climate - an average annual temperature of 18ºC, with hot summers and mild winters. Every year, the skies are clear for 120-150 days, and there are approximately 2,800 hours of sun.

The region of Murcia stands out because of its multiple contrasts: dry vs. green land, plains vs. mountainous areas, coastline vs. inland, vineyards vs. mesetas.

GUIDED ITINERARY IN LA UNIÓN

ITINERARY: “A tribute to the mine”

Description

We’ll meet the guide at a previously agreed location, taking the mining train along the old route 33 to the Visitor’s Centre and the Agrupa Vicenta mine. The Mining Park, with an area of more than 50,000m², reveals the intense underground mining activity that took place in La Unión up until the 50s, when open-air mining started. An unforgettable trip to the past and an indescribable experience that will end with the taste of the area's typical drink, la láguena, in a traditional tavern and a visit to the town, including the fascinating Mining Museum.

GUIDED ITINERARY IN LORCA

1ST ITINERARY: “Lorca and its embroidery”

Description

The tour begins by meeting the guide in Lorca at a prearranged location. We will head for the Visitor Centre, built in the recently restored Convent of La Merced, to get a first and stimulating impression of the city.

Next, we will walk around Lorca's old quarter and visit the most attractive monuments of the city. We will also enjoy the wonderful embroideries of the Paso Azul Museum.

Finally, we will have the opportunity to get to know the typical crafts of the area in the Lorca Regional Craft Centre where we will be able to do some shopping if we want.

2ND ITINERARY: “Lorca: a trip back in time”

Description

The group will meet the guide in Lorca at a prearranged location. We will take the tourist train to go up to the amazing Castillo de la Fortaleza del Sol (Fortress of the Sun), a castle full of history dating back to the 13th century and which was declared "monument of cultural interest". We will visit the Exhibition hall and the inside of the castle.

We will take the train again to go back to town and head for the Lorca Visitor Centre where we will get detailed information on the features and attractions of this fabulous city.

GUIDED ITINERARY IN AGUILAS: “THE MAN AND THE SEA”

Description

The group will meet the guide in Aguilas at a prearranged location. We will take a walk through the Bahía del Hornillo (Hornillo Bay) and enjoy a splendid view of the beach, stretching 500 metres from the mineral loading pier to the Isla del Fraile (Monk's Island), which protects the beach from the east winds.

We will then visit the Museo Monográfico del Ferrocarril (Monographic Railway Museum), situated in the basement of the Edificio del Viajero (Passengers Building) of Aguilas Railway Station. After going through the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (Town Hall Square), we will head for the Termas Romanas (Roman baths) located on remains dating from the 1st century AD.

Finally, we will visit the Centro de Interpretación del Mar (Sea Exhibition hall) and the Archaeological Museum where we will get to know the Roman history of the town through an extensive fossil collection. The Sea Museum has a permanent exhibition room with an aquarium and other items linked to the sea.

GUIDED ITINERARY IN BULLAS: “WINE BY TRADITION”

Description

The guide will meet the group in the Museo del Vino (Wine Museum) where we will learn about the traditional methods of wine production from ancient to present times. We will also have the opportunity to taste the Bullas' wines.

We will then move on to the old quarter where we will enjoy its old houses and colourful small squares. We will visit the Parish Church Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the Vieja Square, the Town Hall, the Clock House, etc.

Finally, we will visit an old family winery, and discover all the traditional tools necessary for the production of this prized "potion".

GUIDED ITINERARY AROUND THE MAR MENOR: “THE LAGOON”

Description

The guide will meet the group at the Local History Museum in San Javier. There, you will learn about social, cultural and agricultural customs of the day-to-day life of this coastal village. You will also come across its traditional fishing nets.

You will then have time to walk around the seafront in La Ribera, where you can enjoy the sun, the sea and the landscape.

At midday, we will head for San Pedro del Pinatar. Once there, we will visit the Parque Natural de las Salinas de San Pedro (San Pedro Salt Mines Natural Park) and its Exhibition hall. For nature lovers, this enclave is an exceptional place, where we can spot different bird species, such as flamingos, wild ducks and different types of seagulls, all year round.

GUIDED ITINERARIES IN CARAVACA

1^ST ITINERARY: “Religion and Festivities”

Description

Caravaca is one of the towns with most monuments in the Region of Murcia - it has an impressive cultural heritage. We will take a walk through the Calle Mayor, bringing together the most striking monuments of Caravaca.

We will start by visiting the Church of el Salvador, a jewel of the Murcian Renaissance from the 16th century, declared 'Monument of Cultural Interest'. We will then visit the Church of La Compañía de Jesús and the monastery of San José. The Town Hall and the Plaza del Arco will give us the opportunity to make a trip back in time. Finally, we will walk up to the Santuario de la Santísima y Vera Cruz de Caravaca (Sanctuary of the Holy Cross) which is also declared 'Monument of Cultural Interest'.

After taking in the history of the city, we will head back towards the centre to visit the Museo de la Fiesta (Festivity Museum) where we will admire the magnificent vestments used during the festivities held in honour of the Holy Cross, and the embroidery that covers the Caballos del Vino (Wine Horses) on the 2nd of May.

2^nd ITINERARY: “By train to the holy town”

Description

Caravaca is one of the towns with most monuments in the Region of Murcia - it has an impressive cultural heritage. That's why we will take a relaxed visit to the town by train to enjoy, all the little detours of its streets. We will start our tour in the Salones del Castillo, then go towards the Santuario de la Santísima y Vera Cruz de Caravaca (Sanctuary of the Holy Cross).

We will stop to appreciate this lovely town in great detail.
Once in the Sanctuary, we will see the Cross, and take in the mystic aura that spreads in the air. We will then go down the Sanctuary by train to enjoy some free time in the streets of Caravaca, and finally will visit the Plaza del Arco and the Church of El Salvador.

Description

The group will meet the guide in Cartagena at a prearranged location. We will walk around this Roman town par excellence: the Calle Mayor and Calle del Carmen will take us back in time. We will then visit the Town Hall, dating from the beginning of the 20th century, an example of Spanish Art Nouveau by the Valladolid architect Tomás Rico Valarino.

After that, we will make our way towards the Rafael Moneo Roman Theatre Museum where we will be able to admire unique items from the empire of Octavius Augustus and visit the 1st century theatre and its archeological remains.

Description

After taking a walk through the town and visiting the Roman Theatre, the church of La Caridad and the Regional Craft Centre, we will enjoy a boat ride all along the coast of Cartagena and discover the town's dock and its strategic defensive position during the Roman times. We will then visit the authentic Spanish Civil War Shelters that reveal the places where Spanish families were hiding during the Civil War. We will also encounter objects and tools from the time such as missiles, weapons or posters from 1936 to 1939.

GUIDED ITINERARY IN MURCIA

1^ST ITINERARY: “A STEP BACK IN TIME”

Description

This visit will start at 10:00 and the guide will meet the group in the Salzillo Museum. Salzillo was one of the main Spanish sculptors during the 18th century, and the museum will show us a wide range of his work.

We will then visit the city centre starting with the Cardenal Belluga Square where we will examine the magnificent baroque façade of the Cathedral and the Episcopal palace. We will also visit the San Juan de Dios church museum, one of the most representative examples of baroque art in Murcia. After visiting the inside of the Cathedral, we will head for the Santa Clara museum through Trapería Street and Santo Domingo Square, the old quarter of Murcia.

The Santa Clara Museum has the main collection of Islamic art in Murcia.

2^ND ITINERARY: “EL VALLE: EMERALD MURCIA”

Description

The group will meet the guide in the visitor's centre of la Luz in El Valle at 10:00. The Visitor's Centre of La Luz, situated in El Valle, will transport us into the history of the protected reserve of the Valle Perdido and its closest districts from the Iberian times to the 20th century. It also contains an exhibition about mountaineering and active tourism, which are both common activities in this area.

Our next stop will be at the Visitor's Centre of San Antonio el Pobre in the hermitage of the same name, and then we will explore Nature Centre where we will become acquainted with all aspects related to the wildlife of this protected site.

We will finish our tour in the sanctuary of La Fuensanta, a magnificent example of baroque art in Murcia and a place of pilgrimage for more than a hundred years.

3^RD ITINERARY: “ARTISTIC MURCIA”

Description

Our guide will meet the group in the Cruz Square in Murcia at 10:00. We will visit the Cathedral of Murcia, admiring the gem of Murcia’s baroque art in all its glory. Then we will make our way to the Real Casino, one of the most symbolic buildings in Murcia, which has been magnificently restored after three years of works.

Finally we will take a stroll in the old quarter of the city: going through the Santo Domingo Square, the Julián Romea Square, Jabonerías Street and the Cardenal Belluga Square, where we can admire the magnificent façade of the cathedral and the Episcopal Palace.

GUIDED ITINERARY IN MULA: “THE IBERIAN ART”

Description

This visit will start in the Cigarralejo Museum, one of the best Iberian Art museums in the world, where we will take a look at the funeral trousseaus of the Iberian necropolis. We will then go for a walk in the urban area, declared a "Historical and Artistic area of a national character". We will see the Casa Pintada, a house with a coat of arms which is home to the Casa Pintada Foundation, the Cristóbal Gabarrón Museum, and a Contemporary Culture Centre. We will also go to the church of San Miguel where we will visit the San Miguel Arcangel Art Museum. We will take a walk through the city, gazing at its many monuments. In the upper part, we can take a look at the historical Church of Santo Domingo with its Renaissance Portal and Baroque interior.

GUIDED ITINERARY IN TOTANA AND ALHAMA

Description

The tour will start in Alhama, where we will visit the ancient baths dating from the Roman times. We will then move on to the Santuario de Santa Eulalia (Sanctuary of Santa Eulalia). Built in 1574, this historical monument of high artistic value is a must-see in the region of Murcia. We will then see Totana's artistic and historical quarter, ending the tour in a pottery workshop with a demonstration of the most typical craft of the area.

1^ST ITINERARY: “FROM CIEZA TO ARCHENA”

Description

The tour will start in Cieza, where we will visit the esparto grass museum and see a demonstration of this local craft. We will then go to the museum of Siyasa where the main architectural decorative items dating from medieval times are kept. After exploring the beautiful Moorish Ricote Valley, a spring of life, we will visit the famous baths of Archena.

2^ND ITINERARY: “THE VALLEY: A MOORISH ORCHARD”

Description

The tour will start with a visit to the Exhibition hall in Archena, where we will get to know more about the valley. We will then take the bus to visit the villages which are part of the Moorish Ricote Valley and we will stop in Ojós to enjoy a nice walk along the banks of the River Segura. On the way to Abarán, we will discover the old waterwheels (norias), water works essential to the irrigation of these lands since time immemorial. Finally, we will visit the Theatre Cervantes built in 1926.
